About Hailey

Hi! I am an artist mainly working in metal, ceramic, and leather. I dabble in history and have two separate book collections; antique and fantasy. I grew up in New Hampshire but made my way to Massachusetts for college and fell in love with the historic New Bedford area. In 2019, I received a dual BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Ceramics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Out of school, I worked in jewelry production before beginning a year long residency (2020-2021) at the Worcester Center For Crafts. Here I discovered my love for teaching and sharing my enthusiasm for making. My personal studio -where the magic happens- is fittingly in an antique mill building, located at Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford, Studio 304.

On weekdays, I do jewelry repair at Paradise Jewelry in Dartmouth MA. If you have any broken jewelry bring it there! I also have work on display in the store if you would like to shop my work in person.

In my studio I use a potter’s wheel to meticulously carve intricate porcelain forms. I draw inspiration from ancient architecture to create contemporary forms that have a sense of temporal ambiguity. I respond to them in metal to create eye-catching jewelry and vessels. My interest in books has made me fascinated by the concept of a story held in the physical bounds of an object.

As mentioned, I am passionate about sharing my craft with others. Interested in a private one on one lesson? Contact me!

My practice of melding metals and ceramic creates unique objects I find endlessly intriguing. In their close integration, the materials compliment each other and are taken to a whole different imaginative space. My excitement for the exploration of materials is part of what drives me to make work the way I do.

My Process and Inspirations

(AKA my Artist Statement)

My interest in books has made me fascinated by the concept of a story held within the physical bounds of an object. Objects hold their history on their surface. It is displayed through scrapes, dents and smudges. In my work, I play with this concept by creating objects with marks of wear. In some pieces I push the story telling further by using narrative elements such as 2D imagery and metal sculptural components. I strive for my work to ignite the viewer’s curiosity. For them to be briefly taken away from reality and lost in a reverie of stories the pieces could tell.

Using a combination of metalsmithing and ceramic skills I create eye-catching jewelry and vessels. I throw and meticulously trim intricate porcelain forms using a potter’s wheel. I use inspiration from ancient architecture to create contemporary forms that have a sense of temporal ambiguity. I then apply oxides and curate damage on the surface of the porcelain to make the piece look as if it has withstood the passage of time. After firing the ceramic forms, I respond to them with metal ornamentations, mechanisms, or narrative elements. My practice of melding metals and ceramic creates unique objects I find endlessly intriguing. In their close integration, the materials compliment each other and are taken to a whole different imaginative space. My excitement for the exploration of materials is part of what drives me to make work the way I do.

I am fascinated by ancient ruins and archaeology. There is something beautiful in the broken fragments of ancient architecture. Fractures and breakages disrupt the linear flow of architectural design which sparks the imagination. Our minds naturally want to fill in the missing pieces. It’s captivating how time can render something destroyed, yet still ripe with beauty and imbued with mystery.
